Student-Intern Orientation

International Student and Scholar Services hosts as-requested and occasional orientations for J-1 student-interns. The objectives of the orientation are to provide participants with:

  • A clear understanding of the services that ISSS provides to J-1 student-interns
  • Essential J-1 visa requirements
  • Helpful answers to questions regarding adjusting to life at the University of Minnesota and in the greater Twin Cities community
  • Appropriate referrals to other organizations, on and off campus, which provide assistance regarding specific issues

Upon arrival at the University of Minnesota, student-interns will be contacted by ISSS to schedule an orientation. Orientations are scheduled during normal working hours (Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and last no more than one hour. Contact the ISSS Welcome Center at 612-626-7100 if you want to request an orientation. If family members will attend, please indicate how many, as space is limited.

Student-interns are encouraged to ask questions at the orientation. During the week in advance of the orientation, student-interns are invited to email their questions to [email protected]. Indicate “Student-Intern Orientation” as the email subject. Providing a list of questions will help ISSS staff to better assist participants.

Each student-intern will be given a packet of materials including the Twin Cities transit and entertainment maps and information on topics such as enhancing English language skills and campus libraries.

ISSS staff look forward to meeting newly arrived student-interns at the orientation.
