1. F/J WALK-IN CHANGES: NOVEMBER 8-11

Please remember that we will have limited staff available for F and J Visa Walk-Ins this week (November 7-11) due to staff attendance of a professional conference. Please note:

Tuesday, November 8, F and J Walk-Ins--CANCELLED
(Financial Aid Walk-ins on Tuesday are still available)
Friday, November 11, F and J Walk-ins -- Limited staff

Please plan your visits to ISSS accordingly and try to limit your walk-in requests during this week to time-sensitive issues. Thank you for your understanding.

2.TRAINING FOR GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING: “AROUND THE WORLD IN 120 MINUTES”: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 8

Hear directly from a panel of international and multicultural students about their experiences at the U of MN from their personal and cultural perspectives. This lively session will give you a whirlwind tour of the globe by addressing a series of questions, including:

  • What are international and multicultural students’ impressions of the US?
  • Why do students come to the US and the U of MN to study?
  • What kinds of personal and academic challenges do they face here?
  • What do international and multicultural students wish others knew about their cultures?

When: Tuesday, November 8, 8:30-10:30 am

3. TOWARD SUCCESS IN THE U.S. WORKSHOP,
“GAIN CONFIDENCE FOR ACADEMIC & PERSONAL SUCCESS”:
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 9

Building and maintaining your self-confidence is a key to success in a foreign culture. This workshop will offer some tips on how to trust yourself and your ability and show your confidence effectively. Empower yourself at this workshop!

Time: Wednesday, November 9, 3:00pm- 4:30 pm

4. INTERNATIONAL HEALTH ADVOCATES:
“CONVERSATIONS ABOUT HEALTH” WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9 & 10

The International Health Advocates (IHAs) are looking for international students to participate in “Conversations about Health”. The purpose of this activity is to gather information that will help improve the health of international students. The conversation groups are composed of 8- 10 students who will be asked open-ended questions about campus heath issues (access, insurance, feedback, etc). Free pizza and beverages will be provided. International Health Advocates are a peer education group based at Boynton Health Service.

When: Wednesday, November 9 from 6:00- 7:00 pm
Where: W126 Boyton Health Service (primary focus - undergraduate students)

When: Thursday, November 10, from 5:00- 6:00 pm
Where: Fireplace Room of the Commonwealth Terrace (primary focus – residents of Commonwealth Terrace)

If you would like to participate, please select a date that works best for you and send an email to iha@umn.edu. Participation will be limited to the first 15 students who respond for each date. Call 625-5944 if you have any questions. This event is co-sponsored by Culture Corps.

5. TOWARD SUCCESS IN THE U.S. WORKSHOP,
“EFFECTIVE CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION AND MORE”: TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 15

Do you often have difficulty communicating with your classmates, professors or advisors either in or out of the classroom? Attend this workshop and you will have the opportunity to:

• Learn about aspects of intercultural communication,
• Identify your preferred communication style and
• Develop strategies to communicate more effectively with U.S. counterparts

When: Tuesday, November 15, 3:00pm-5:00pm

7. INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK EVENTS:

Mark your calendars for International Education Week 2005, to be held Nov. 14- 18. All student organizations, colleges, and departments are encouraged to plan activities and events that highlight international education at the U. For more information, go to
