NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS:
CROSS–CULTURAL DISCUSSION GROUPS: FALL 2005 SEMESTER

International and U.S. Students are invited to join our Fall 2005 semester cross–cultural discussion groups.  Group members will meet once a week to share cross–cultural experiences, personal thoughts, and feelings in a relaxed small group atmosphere.  For more information and to complete a participant application, visit the following web page: http://www.isss.umn.edu/programs/disgroup/default.html.  These groups might fill quickly, so please submit your application as soon as possible. 

2. GLOBAL DISCUSSION ON–CAMPUS: MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19

Join us for an exciting discussion about “The Next Superpower? The dynamism and dilemmas of the new China.”  Former U.S. Diplomat, Thomas Hanson, will be leading the discussion.  This event will take place on Monday, September 19 from 12:10 – 1:20 p.m. in 110 Heller Hall (West Bank).  “Global Discussions On–Campus” has been successful program for about four years, with sponsorship from Culture Corps (through ISSS) and the Minnesota International Center.  Some snacks provided, however please feel free to bring a bag lunch.  The fall schedule is posted below, or contact Hitomi Maeda for more information: maeda0015@umn.edu

  • September 19: “The Next Superpower? The Dynamism and Dilemmas of the New China”
  • October 10: “India and China Rising: Can the U.S. Economy Keep Pace?”
  • October 17: Global Discussion on Campus Finale: “Asian Security – Political and Military Tensions on the Rise”
3. NEW H–1B WORKSHOP: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 20

Do you find the idea of applying for an H–1B visa daunting?  Please join Dorsey and Whitney attorney Craig Peterson for an informational session on H–1B eligibility requirements, the application process, and the necessary timelines. The workshop will be held in Blegen Hall 115 at 3:30 p.m. on September 20.  Mr. Peterson will also be available to answer any questions you may have regarding the H–1B process and applying for a H–1B in the U.S. industry sector. 

The workshop is free and no registration is required.

SUBSCRIBING/UNSUBSCRIBING TO THE WEEKLY UPDATE

In response to the request of faster notification of visa information and ISSS events, International Student and Scholar Services offers "ISSS Weekly Update" newsletter. At the start of each week, ISSS Weekly Update is sent to all subscribers via email. All international scholars and students, and all ISSS clients that rely on ISSS services are strongly encouraged to subscribe to the "ISSS Weekly Update".

These Updates consist of a very brief listing of announcements such as:

  • Changes and important news about Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) regulations
  • Dates of events such as: financial aid information sessions,
  • Career workshops for international students,
  • Tax help sessions for international students and scholars.
  • Small World Coffee Hour, International Scholar Reception, International Student Graduation Reception, and more!
  • Deadlines and document turnover time (e.g., when to submit documents for signatures if you plan to travel during breaks.)
  • Changes in ISSS Walk–In or general hours.

Any specific events that ISSS is offering to international students and scholars.
