In June, we announced in the WeeklyUpdate that a new J-1 regulation was published regarding length of program for J-1 Research Scholars and Professors. The newregulation would allow J-1 Research Scholars and Professors to extend their J-1 programs for up to 5 years. However, the regulation WILL NOT GO INTO EFFECT until the extension process becomes available in the SEVIS system. The U.S. Department of State has not stated a projectedimplementation date. ISSS will announce the implementation of the newregulation as soon as we are informed. It is likely to be spring or summer 2006.

In the meantime, J-1 Research Scholars and Professors who need to extend their J-1 programs beyond 3.5 years can discuss their options with anISSS J-1adviser. It is possible for ISSS toapply to the Department of State foran extension of up to 5 years (total) for Research Scholars and Professors who need the extension to complete their original J-1 program. Department of State charges a $198 feefor this application (Once the process is available in SEVIS, there will not be a $198feeto Department of State).
