Immigration and Visa Regulation Advising
One of the main functions carried out by ISSS is to assist international students and Scholars at the University of Minnesota in maintaining their non-immigrant status in the United States. The office issues non-immigrant documents required by the U.S. government for persons with certain types of visas: F-1 (student), J-1 (student and scholar), and H-1B (specialty occupation).
We also prepare documents for travel, dependent travel, change of degree program, transfer of schools, extension of stay, employment options, and (in some cases) for entry to the University.
Please note, however, that International Student and Scholar Services is not an office of the Department of HomeLand Security, formally known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
Our advising staff's expertise in non-immigrant visa issues enables them to ensure that University of Minnesota students, scholars, and staff holding F, J, or H visas can get answers to their visa questions by contacting ISSS. Individuals who are, or plan to be, affiliated with the University of Minnesota and those who hold other types of non-immigrant visas may also seek information from ISSS.
This site provides general visa information. For detailed questions, come to ISSS during our walk-in hours for a 15-minute advising session, or call (612) 626-7100 to make an appointment with an ISSS adviser.
