Example of SWCH Programs

Small World Coffee Hour offers numerous dynamic events and through the following example we will attempt to give you a taste of the program!


The Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars (FACSS) sponsored the Small World Coffee Hour event on October 3rd, 2003. As the theme was Chinese culture, colorful cultural performances, arts and savory foods were presented. Participants learned about Chinese culture, both by observing and by experiencing it themselves.

Chinese Dance:
Chinese Dancer, Ms. Jianwen Lai, performed a short dance. She also taught students the basics of various types of Chinese dancing.

Tai'Chi
Tai’Chi, a "relaxed martial arts", is an important part of the Chinese culture. It traces back to the great Tsoist Zhang Shanfeng several hundred years ago, and has different versions like Cheng and Yang styles. The essence of Tai'chi is balance and relaxing. Those who were interested were invited to try as well.

Chinese Kongfu (Martial Arts)
Bo Xu, a scholar who has been practicing Chinese traditional martial arts since childhood, demonstrated the powerful Chinese Kongfu.

Chinese Tea Ceremony
The presenter has a lovely Chinese antique store called "Sunny Sky" on the Grand Avenue in St. Paul. She introduced participants to the elegant Chinese Tea Ceremony.

Calligraphy
Chinese Calligraphy was presented. Participants also had a chance to try themselves with the paintbrush and the ink.

Juggling
Chinese juggling was also performed.

Chinese Dumpling Making
Dumpling is a well-loved traditional Chinese food. Participants had fun learning how to make dumplings with our Chinese “chefs.”

Slides Show
Beautiful Chinese scenery and colorful cultural events were presented in a slide show.

Chinese Artifacts
Chinese artifacts, such as fans, paper cuts, woodcarvings, traditional clothing, pottery, and many more were displayed. Volunteers introduced participants to the function and origin of different artifacts.

Chinese Music
Traditional Chinese music played by Chinese instruments was also presented throughout the event.
