Study of the United States Institutes for Student Leaders

Welcome

Welcome to the Study of the United States Institutes for Student Leaders program at the University of Minnesota! We are very happy you are participating in this program. Your program staff will work hard and do their best to help you feel comfortable in Minnesota and to help you adjust to living in the United States. We look forward to your arrival!

About Our Program

The principal objective of the Institute is to heighten participants’ awareness of the history and evolution of U.S. society, culture, values and institutions. Throughout the course of this program, participants will study the role and influence of principles and values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual rights, freedom of expression, equality, diversity and tolerance.

Participants in the Study of the U.S. Student Leaders are highly motivated undergraduate students from colleges, universities and other institutions of higher education in selected countries overseas who demonstrate leadership through academic work, community involvement, and extracurricular activities. They are a balanced mix of male and female participants from both rural and urban areas who have little or no prior experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of their home country. Their major fields of study will be varied, and include the natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, education and business. All participants will have a good knowledge of English.

Participants

This summer’s participants come from Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Egypt. Ten participants are women and ten are men.
