Getting Started on a Culture Corps Project
Step One: Develop Your Ideas

There are many things to consider when thinking about a Culture Corps project. To assist with this process, we have provided a worksheet for you to guide your process. Use this worksheet to help you formulate your project ideas and your learning goals. Then bring this worksheet with you when you set up your meeting with a Culture Corps staff member to discuss your ideas.

Step Two: Meet with Culture Corps Staff

Send e-mail to culture Corp or meet with Thorunn Bjarndottir, Culture Corps Coordinator

Contact ISSS at 612-626-7100 to set up an appointment with Culture Corps staff. During this initial meeting, discuss ideas that you have with the Culture Corps staff about possible projects. The staff will help you further discuss and develop your ideas.

Step Three: Finalize Your Project Plan

This step may be a bit different for each student, depending on how fully developed your idea may be. For example, some students may choose to or may need to meet with Culture Corps staff again to discuss their ideas. Others may continue to develop their ideas via email communication with Culture Corps staff. To help you prepare for finalizing the project and to get ready for the on-line application, we strongly encourage you to complete the application questions in the word document. Click here to see these questions: Culture Corps Project Application (Word Document).

Step Four: Mentor

All projects need to have a University staff or faculty serve as a mentor for the project. On the application, you will need to give the mentor’s name, email address, and department. In addition, you will also need to explain how you will work together with your mentor.

Step Five: Fill out the web-based application

Once you have completed the previous steps, the Culture Corps staff will send you an email with the web-based application information. Take your responses from the Microsoft Word Based application (from step three) and insert these into the on-line application.

Step Six: Revisions

You may be asked to make revisions either by Culture Corps staff or the Culture Corps Committee.

Step Seven: Award Notification by Culture Corps Staff

Once these steps are completed, you will be notified of whether or not your project was awarded. If awarded, you will be notified of the amount and this will be placed within your student account as soon as we can process the necessary paperwork – typically 5 business days. You are now ready to begin your project! We strongly encourage you to remain in contact with the Culture Corps staff and your mentor. We’re here to help you.

Thank you!

While the process may initially seem long, our experience is that this process is very helpful in developing high standard projects that are meaningful and rewarding for student recipients, the departments, and the entire campus community. Thank you for all your time and efforts to improve the internationalization at the University of Minnesota!

Quotes

"Culture Corps gives an important message to international students and their departments: Don't hide differences, use them!"
Anja Klock

"Our dictionary project, although far from completion, is making gigantic strides in the right direction thanks to the insights Ms. Reinertsen provides and the discussions we have about the actual, contemporary usages in Norwegian. These kinds of issues will prove to be beneficial to all Norwegian language students at the University of Minnesota and beyond."
Dr. Louis Janus
Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA)

"International students expose the University community to a different type of knowledge that we otherwise overlook."

Dr. Mohammed Bari, Culture Corps Founder
