International Student Ambassadors

Becoming an International Student Ambassador

We are looking for current international students to volunteer as International Student Ambassadors for fall 2009  - spring 2010. As a cultural liaison to new students, you’ll explore your life at the University of Minnesota and have amazing discussions with other current international students.

Application will be accepted until October 2, 2009.

Ambassador Duties

  1. Write blogs about personal experiences at the University of Minnesota.
  2. Attend Friday bi-weekly meetings.
  3. Communicate with and respond to inquiries from prospective and admitted international students.
  4. Provide campus tours for prospective students and delegations via podcast or in person.
  5. Provide feedback on the international student experience through focus groups and panels when needed.
  6. Meet with your college liaison once a month to talk about resources to highlight with in the college, frequently asked questions and possible blog topics.

Time Commitment

  • Must participate in training on Friday 10/16 from 2:30 – 6:30 p.m.
  • Attend bi-weekly meetings on the following Fridays from 2:30 – 3:30 pm: 10/30, 11/13, 12/4, 1/15, 1/29, 2/12, 2/26, 3/12, 4/2, 4/16, 4/30.
  • Can commit 1-2 hours a week for blogging and answering student questions.

Selection Criteria

  1. Current degree seeking international student with good academic standing (minimum GPA 3.0).
  2. Positive outlook about the University of Minnesota.
  3. Understanding of needs of prospective and new international students.
  4. . Excellent communication skills including being able to write reflectively about personal experiences.
  5. Ability to work independently and has proven time management skills.
  6. Familiar with opportunities and resources available to students at the University of Minnesota.

Application Process

  1. All applications must be submitted online and received by October 2nd.
  2. Applications will be reviewed by committee and selected applicants will be interviewed the week of October 5th.
  3. Applicants will be notified of selection decision by October 9th.
