New Student Checklist: Register for Classes
After you have removed all holds (temporarily or permanently) from your record, and have met with your college or department advisor, it may be possible to register for classes. Most new students, especially undergraduates, will register during their college orientation. It is best to register as early as possible so you have access to courses before they become filled.
The official Class Schedule and other registration tools are found online at the U of Minnesota OneStop website
This webpage has all the relevant course information for deciding which classes to take, including:
Class Search: to find classes that fit particular criteria.
Class Schedule: to figure out when and where a class meets, how many seats are still available, and what class number you need to use to register for it.
Course Guide to get more background information about the course—what it covers, workload, etc.
Also, the University’s Registration Policies and Procedures booklet provides detailed instructions about registration, tuition, fees, exams, and grades, as well as a special section for international students. Read through this information carefully.
You will also find a Registration Checklist at OneStop
that will outline the steps you must follow to register for classes. Follow this checklist after you have gone through your college orientation and/or after you have met with your academic advisor.
If you are registering on your own rather than with the help of your college or department (graduate students may be able to do this), you can go on-line at a University computer lab, on your personal computer, or on a computer terminal at a registration center. If you need assistance, you can go to one of the following OneStop Student Service Centers for help with the class registration process:
Here is some other information that you need to begin the registration process:
- All international students and their dependents will be automatically enrolled in the University sponsored Student Health Benefit Plan unless they are covered by a United States-based employer-sponsored health plan or the Graduate Assistant Insurance Plan (GA Plan) provided by the University of Minnesota.
- Special Procedures for Sponsored students:
Please go to the Pay Tuition page for more information regarding your sponsorship letter and the steps that need to be taken at the time you register for classes.
Future Semesters
