  •  A. What is Document Check?
  • Document Check is a procedure that verifies a student’s immigration status to ensure that the student is eligible to start an academic program at the University of Minnesota for the upcoming academic semester.

  • B. When is Document Check?
  • Visit our Document Check main page and select your first semester of enrollment to find out when you can visit ISSS for Document Check.

  • C. What happens during Document Check?
  • During Document Check, you will submit your immigration documents to an international student advisor. The advisor will photocopy and review your documents and provide information for new students to you. Also, you will sign up for the International Student Orientation Program (ISOP). Your registration holds, which prevent you from registering for classes, will be discussed with you during Document Check. Document Check lasts between 30-45 minutes. You will also receive a copy of our Arrival Guide  for new students.

  • D. What do I need to bring to Document Check?
  • Bring the following documents with you:

    1. I-20 or DS-2019
    2. Passport and visa stamp (in your passport)
    3. I-94 card (white card in your passport that you receive at the U.S. border)
    4. Dependent documents (I-20 or DS-2019, passport, visa stamp, and I-94 card) if you have dependents with you
    5. Previous school’s I-20 or DS-2019 (if you attended another school in the U.S.)
    6. University of Minnesota ID number (on your admission letter)
    7. Sponsor letter (if your tuition & fees are paid directly to the University by a government or international agency)
