The following checklist contains the steps you need to take as a new international graduate student upon first arriving to the University of Minnesota. Click on the above link to view the undergraduate checklist.

Before you arrive:

  1. Confirm your Enrollment
  2. Apply for your Student Visa OR begin your visa transfer process
    (Visa transfers are students coming from another U.S college or university)

  3. Sponsored Students: Contact the sponsored student coordinator

  4. Apply for on-campus housing or research off-campus housing options

  5. Plan for your Expenses and Payment of Tuition
  6. Prepare for your New Student Orientation
  7. Choose your Arrival Date
  8. Reserve your temporary housing
  9. Send your Immunization Record and Complete the online form
  10. Initiate Your U of M E-Mail Account
    Please Note: A Social Security number is not needed to activate your email account. You may leave this field blank.
  11. Read the International Student Ambassador blog to learn about life at the U of M.
  12. Plan Transportation from the Airport

After you arrive:

  1. Check into Temporary Housing
  2. Sponsored Students: Schedule an appointment with the sponsored student coordinator
  3. Attend Document Check and bring the your documents

  4. Attend International Orientation Program (ISOP)

  5. Remove Registration Holds

  6. Contact Your College/Department
    You will need to obtain necessary permissions for registration. You may also be expected to attend a university or a department orientation.

  7. Update addresses on OneStop

  8. Sign up for Health Insurance when you Register for Classes

  9. Obtain Identification Card

  10. Pay Tuition & Fees

  11. Subscribe to the ISSS Weekly Update
