Scholar on J Visa: Undergraduate Statement
For newly arriving J-1s in the Professor, Scholar, or Short-term Scholar Categories
If your department is requesting a J-1 Professor, Scholar, or Short-term Scholar visa document for someone who is an undergraduate student (i.e., does not yet have a bachelor’s degree or the equivalent), the statement below is required. (Medical students are an exception, the statement is not required.) The UMN faculty mentor must sign the statement indicating that the student possesses the necessary skills, knowledge, English proficiency and academic background to successfully carry out the goals and responsibilities of the exchange activities. This letter should be printed on your department letterhead, signed by the faculty mentor, and attached to the “UMN Department Request for a SEVIS DS-2019” form.
Undergraduate Statement:
I confirm that (name) has been invited to participate in research activities (or fill in other activities)that are part of an academic exchange based on a formal or informal exchange agreement between the University of Minnesota and his/her home institution. The Exchange Visitor possesses the necessary skills, knowledge, English proficiency and academic background to successfully carry out the goals and responsibilities of the exchange activities.
