Scholar on J Visa: J-1 Scholar Employment
Including J-1 Research Scholars, Professors, and Short-term Scholars

Scholars may not work without proper work authorization. Work options are limited.

J-1 research scholars, professors, and short-term scholars are permitted to receive payment for services at the location described on their DS-2019.  For those scholars with a DS-2019 from the University of Minnesota, P-1-00045, the DS-2019 shows that you are allowed to receive payment from a particular department at the University of Minnesota and for the original purpose for which the J-1 status was granted.

See an ISSS J-1 adviser for questions about:

  • Changing or adding sites of activity (options are very limited)
  • Occasional Lectures and Short-term Consultations

Note: Prior written authorization is required by your program sponsor before a scholar may participate in occasional lectures or short-term consultations. For those on a DS-2019 from the University of Minnesota, P-1-00045, authorization is given by ISSS.
