17-Month Extension of
Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT)

Summary:

Post-Completion Optional Practical Training can be extended by 17 months for certain STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degree holders.

To apply for 17-Month Extension of OPT, you must:

  • Complete the 17-Month Extension of OPT Online Workshop
  • Download the 17-Month Extension of OPT Application Packet or obtain the packet at ISSS
  • Complete the “17-Month Extension of Post-Completion Optional Practical Training Student Request” form
  • Complete Form I-765*
  • Complete Form G-1145
  • Bring forms to ISSS and meet with an F-1 adviser for processing

If you are out of town and unable to come to ISSS, please contact ISSS to work with an adviser prior to sending your application. The application should be addressed to the adviser and clearly marked “17 Month OPT Extension” application. Include your contact information.

*ISSS does not recommend electronically filing the I-765
