Events and Opportunities Outside ISSS

ISSS encourages international students and scholars to get involved with cross-cultural and other special events and opportunities on-campus and in the community. Check this web page often for new opportunities! We hope these activities will lead to friendships, culture learning, and/or experiences for your resume.

ISSS does not necessarily sponsor or endorse these events and organizations. Please use your own judgment when choosing to participate.

SPECIAL NOTE TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:
Always be sure to see an ISSS adviser or attend a practical training
workshop before applying for paid internships or professional employment
opportunities.

  3. Volunteer Opportunities with the St. Paul Public Libraries
  4. The Homework Center is a safe, comfortable place for students of all ages to study and get help with their homework. We operate in five different library locations within the Saint Paul system: Riverview, Rice Street, Sun Ray, Dayton's Bluff, and the new Rondo library on Dale and University. We are open after school from 3:00-7:00 Mondays through Thursdays, as well as Sunday afternoons from 1:00-4:00. The Homework Center program has been growing each year since its inception in 2002, and we are in constant need of volunteers to serve as tutors. Volunteers are welcome to choose whichever location and hours suit them best; we ask for a minimum commitment of two hours per week. Check out our website at http://www.sppl.org/homework/volunteer.html. For more information, contact Chris Jarvis at 651.266.7460.

The library also has another program called Read With Me, which is a literacy program offering free help with reading and writing for first, second, and third graders. Students meet one-on-one with their tutors throughout the school year, allowing them to develop a close mentoring relationship. Tutors receive three hours of training and the time commitment is low: one hour a week. Pairs can meet at any branch of the Saint Paul Public Library in the late afternoon or early evening. It's a great way to connect with a child and show him/her that reading is important, attainable, and fun. You can pick up a brochure at your local library, or read about the program online at http://www.sppl.org/families/read-with-me.html. For more information, contact Annaka Larson at 651.266.7437.

  5. YMCA – Volunteer, Internships & Fun (Community)
  6. Are you looking for ways to get involved in the community, find exciting internships, explore diverse cultures, or travel to another U.S. state for break? Are you hoping to build leadership skills or expand your resume? Have you ever been to the University YMCA? With the “U-Y” the opportunities are endless! The University YMCA is located on the East Bank at 1801 University Avenue S.E. (right across from the field house). You’ll find detailed information on their website:

  7. Conversation Partner To Practice English! (U Of M)
  8. Would you like to practice your English with a native speaker? Help someone who is learning your native language? Learn more about American culture? Share your culture? TandemPlus matches individuals and small groups for language and culture exchanges. Once matched, partners decide when, where, and how often to meet; typically they spend half of their time together speaking each language. For more information or to register, visit the TandemPlus website or contact the TandemPlus coordinator at 612-626-6050 or tandem@umn.edu.
