Career Workshops

Every semester, ISSS offers a series of career workshops for international students on campus. These sessions provide practical information and materials on how to find a job, how to write a resume and cover letter, how to prepare for a job interview, and visa options after graduation. Some semesters, additional topics are offered such as the academic job search, finding an internship, and the home country job search.

These workshops are free. Registration is not required.

ISSS offers workshops for international Students during fall and spring semesters. The new schedule is available at the beginning of each semester.

Visas Options for International Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars (H-1 B focus) March 4, 2009 4:00-6:00 p.m. Room 306 Folwell Hall, East Bank This workshop will cover immigration options after graduation, focusing on H-1B`s and alternatives to H-1Bs, as well as an overview of employment-based permanent residence.

Visa Options for International Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scholars (Permanent Residency Focus) March 12, 2009 4:00-6:00 p.m. Room 31 Rapson Hall, East Bank The workshop is different from the one offered on March 4th. It will focus on both temporary and permanent residence visa options, including H-1B Professional Visas, O-1 Extraordinary Ability Visas, TN Trade NAFTA, and permanent residency options. Questions regarding the waiver of the J-1 foreign residence requirement will be addressed.

Identifying Job Options and Conducting a Search in a Tough Economy

Session: March 25, 2009 will be on Room 230 Anderson Hall

This workshop will cover the job search process from start to offer. It will address conducting a self-assessment, planning, knowing your options, relationship-building and offer negotiations. There will be break-out sessions for the academic and non-academic search.
CV/Resume Building and Formatting for Academia and Industry March 26, 2009 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. Room 101 Walter Library, East Bank This workshop is for graduate students at all stages of their programs planning to seek faculty positions or careers in industry and private organizations. The presentation will cover the difference between the CV and résumé, essential components; what employers seek; and competitively packaging your skills.

Formatting the International CV/Resume to the American Job Market April 7, 2009 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. Room 3-125 Mayo East Bank Workshop will address how to format a CV/résumé that was developed for job markets outside of the United States to apply for jobs within the United States. Special focus will be on various types of resumes, language/cultural differences and tailoring the résumé/CV to the position you are seeking. This workshop is intended primarily for international graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.

Critiquers: Representatives from Office of Human Resources, International Student and Scholar Services, The Graduate School and Center for Teaching and Learning This is a follow up to the April 7th workshop for international graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to receive feedback on their CV/resume .
