Individual Taxpayer Identification Number(ITIN)
Individuals requiring an identification number to file income tax forms, or for some other specific legal purpose, but who do not qualify for a Social Security number (F–2, J–2, F–1 without job offer, H–4 visa holders), may be eligible for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). To apply for an ITIN, you must submit a W–7 form and supporting documentation to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). You may also need a letter from the Social Security Office stating that you are not eligible for a Social Security Number, a “rejection letter”.
You will also need a letter from a University official stating that you neither have a job offer pending, nor have you already secured employment. You can request this verification letter from either OHR Job Center at 170 Donhow, or Payroll Services at 545 WBOB. See more information from the office of Human Resources.
