SEVIS Fee

As of September 2004, most new F-1 and J-1 students and scholars are required to pay a $100 SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) fee before applying for U.S. entry visa.  New J-1 and F-1 visa applicants must pay before they can apply for their U.S. entry visas.  The fee does not apply to scholars and students who are continuing with the same program (those who are not entering on a new I-20 marked, “Initial” or a new DS-2019 marked, “Begin a new program”.  In the case of Canadian citizens, they must pay the fee before going to the U.S. port of entry.
