Obtain or Extend H Status
Request to Extend H-1B at University of Minnesota
Departments can request extension of H-1B status for a current UMN H-1B if the employee has not used the full 6 years of available H-1B status. To apply for extension of H-1B for a UMN employee, the Department Administrative Contact person should go to the H-1B Application Process to start the process. Employees can go to New Application Instructions for Employees page to understand their role in the application process.
For payroll purposes, if the employee has filed a timely application for extension of stay, he/she is authorized to continue employment with the University of Minnesota for a period not to exceed 120 days beginning on the date of expiration of the authorized period of stay. When the application has been sent to the USCIS, a staff member of ISSS will input the 120-day grace period (Renewal in Progress) into the Visa Permit Data panel of the Peoplesoft system on a future-dated row. This will allow payroll to see that the extension application is pending.
When the approval notice is received at ISSS, we will notify the department contact person it is ready for pickup. The employee will then need to bring the H-1B Notice of Approval to 545 West Bank Office Building (WBOB) or 170 Donhowe Building to update their I-9 record for payroll.
Note: Due to the fact that the Renewal in Progress is shown on a future-dated row, the employee will continue to show up with an expiration date on the Payroll Visa Expiration Report until the last day their stay is valid. Department payroll staff may, therefore, wish to view the individual Visa Permit Data panel to make sure Renewal in Progress has been entered by ISSS. |
