Obtain or Extend H Status
Request to Extend H-1B at University of Minnesota
Departments can request extension of H-1B status for a current UMN H-1B if the employee has not used the full 6 years of available H-1B status. To apply for extension of H-1B for a UMN employee, the Department Administrative Contact person should go to the H-1B Application Process to start the process. Employees can go to Application Instructions for Employees to understand their role in the application process.
For payroll purposes, if the employee has filed a timely application for extension of stay, he/she is authorized to continue employment with the University of Minnesota for a period not to exceed 120 days beginning on the date of expiration of the authorized period of stay. When the application has been sent to the USCIS, a staff member of ISSS will input the 120-day grace period (Renewal in Progress) into the Visa Permit Data panel of the Peoplesoft system on a future-dated row. This will allow payroll to see that the extension application is pending.
After the H-1B Notice of Approval is received at ISSS, we will notify the Department Administrative Contact person when it is ready to be picked up. The employee will then need to schedule an appointment at the Job Center to update their I-9 Form for payroll purposes. This should be done within three days of the Notice of Approval start date. (If the Notice of Approval start date has already passed, he/she should make the appointment immediately.) To schedule an appointment with the staff at the Job Center, either call the Office of Human Resources Call Center at 612-625-2016 or email employ@umn.edu. The employee should then bring the H-1B Notice of Approval to the appointment in Room 170 of the Donhowe Building.
Note: Due to the fact that the Renewal in Progress is shown on a future-dated row, the employee will continue to show up with an expiration date on the Payroll Visa Expiration Report until the last day their stay is valid. Department payroll staff may, therefore, wish to view the individual Visa Permit Data panel to make sure Renewal in Progress has been entered by ISSS. |
