Visa Options for International Faculty & Staff:
There are many visa options to consider when bringing a foreign
national to visit your department. The visa needed by the foreign
national to enter the U.S. and to come to the University of Minnesota
depends on the purpose of the visit, length, and other logistics
such as payment or reimbursement of expenses.

- B-1/B-2 Visitor Visa Status :
These are visitors for business and tourism, respectively.
- WB/WT (Visa Waiver Program):
These
are visitors for business and tourism, respectively, but the requirement
for a passport visa stamp is waived for citizens of certain countries.
- J-1 Visas :
Exchange
Visitor Visa - U of MN is authorized to offer 3 J-1 categories
(Research Scholar, Professor, & Short-term Scholar) in addition
to the J-1 student category. These are individuals who are coming
to the U of MN to do research, teach a course, etc.
- H-1B Visas
The
H-1B visa is an employment-based visa that is initiated by the
employer not the employee.
- TN:
The TN
is an employment visa which allows Canadian and Mexican
citizens to be employed in the U.S.
- O-1:
The O-1
is for individuals of "extraordinary ability or achievement."
